About Uganda Gorilla Trekking & Accommodations
Uganda is the only tour destination in the world where one can see the Big Five animals and the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The African Big 5 animals include Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard and Rhino. In Uganda, we have Buffaloes, Elephants, Leopards and Lions in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks, Rhinos on Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary, and mountain gorillas in the mountainous Impenetrable jungles of Bwindi and Mgahinga National Park.
Gorilla Tracking is the main attractions of tourists in Uganda. Other attractions / tour activities are; white water rafting, game viewing, chimpanzee tracking, birding, boat cruise and cultural excursions among others. The country currently has 14 habituated gorilla groups, and each group is visited by a maximum of 8 persons per day. One must posses a gorilla permit that acts as permission for him/ her to join the trek in search for mountain gorillas. Gorilla permits must be reserved in advance because their demand is very high through out the year, costs US$600 each for foreigners, can be reserved through travel agents, tour operators of direct from Uganda Wildlife Authority Headquarters in Kamwokya on the Kampala suburbs.
In Bwindi National Park, gorilla trekking activity takes place in the 4 sections of the park namely; Buhoma with 3 groups (Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura), Ruhija sector with 3 groups (Oruzogo, Bitukura and Kyaguriro), Nkuringo sector with Nkuringo group and Rushaga with groups like Kahunjye, Mishaya, Nshongi, Businjye, Bikingi and Bushaho among others. The 4 sections have different accommodation options, therefore, before, you should buy a permit coresponding with the lodge / camp you are interested in.
About Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Accommodation options
According to most experienced travelers to Africa, Rwanda offers the best gorilla trekking location in Volcanoes National Park, with about 10 families habituated for tourism purposes. The is conveniently located in the northern province of Rwanda (Muzanze), about 90 minutes drive from Kigali city / Airport. The short distance between the gorilla park and Kigali capital make it convenient for shorter trips like 1 day or 2 days gorilla packages.
Gorilla permits for Rwanda gorilla trekking cost US$750 each for foreign non residents, while East African foreign residents pay US$475 each. The permits can be booked through tour operators of direct through Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in Kigali. A wide variety of accommodations around Volcanoes Gorilla Park and nearby town of Ruhengeri and these include Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, Virunga Lodge, Le Bambou gorilla lodge, Mountain gorilla view, Muhabura hotel, Kinigi Guest House and Hotel La Palme among others.
About Gorilla Trekking in DR Congo and Accommodations
The country for a while has been politically unstable, and this is the major threat to tourism development especially in the Eastern part that is endowed with both lowland in Kahuzi Biega National Park and mountain gorillas Virunga National Park. Apart from gorilla trekking, DR Congo also attracts adventurous travelers to climb Mt. Nyiragongo and Mt. Nyamurangira, some of the active volcanoes on Africa! Some accommodation options around Goma and Northern Kivu area.

Gorilla Trekking Packing List
Below is a guideline of what you should carry on your safari to Africa to see the mountain gorillas and other wildlife;
- At least 2 long sleeved and 2 short sleeved t-shirts
- At least 2 pairs of light weight trousers – that can dry quickly (if wearing on treks) and a pair of shorts
- 1 sweater or sweatshirt, a waterproof and windproof jacket
- 1 skirt ( for women)
- A pair of garden gloves
- Strong waterproof walking boots up to ankle level and a pair of sports sandals like Tevas
- Hat-wide brim or with a visor for sun protection
- Sleepwear; Underwear, Lightweight wool socks, Swimsuit (and a plastic bag)
Among other items to carry include Sunglasses with neck strap, Insect repellent with DEET, Small day pack, Flashlight, Binoculars, extra batteries, Camera and extra lenses, Film particularly fast film for the gorillas, Personal toiletries, Prescription medicines and possibly prescription itself, Kleenex tissues, Small notebook, not forgetting first Aid Kit including rehydration sachets, anti-diarrhea medicine, aspirin, cold medication, antiseptic cream, band-aids, motion sickness pills, lip balm, eye drops and personal medication.
